Hello Everyone,

My name is Stephanie Kale and I'm hoping to do a radio documentary next year on teaching yoga in Ontario prisons to complete my graduate degree in journalism.

As a yoga and meditation enthusiast myself, my advisor is weary of me exploring the topic because he thinks I won't present a fully balanced story.

Which leads me to a few questions that I would really appreciate feedback on.

First, does anyone know of people in the Canadian prison system or government who speak out against such programs, taking issue with taxes, or simply the idea of fostering happiness in a place that some would view as one that should be strictly for the purposes of punishment?

And second, has anyone dealt with this issue of presenting the 'anti'-side of teaching yoga/meditation in prisons?

Thanks for reading this.

All the best,
Stephanie

Hi, Stephanie,

I don't have experience with this, especially not in Canada. I have a friend whose son has spent a lot of time in Canadian jails and prison, though. Anyway, I think you could check with the Human Kindness Foundation (Bo and Sita Lozoff) to see what they've run across if anything. A "balanced" paper would present the negative side, yes?

I do know that often correctional officers have negative feelings about inmates having access to things that they must pay to have, like college classes and the like. One possibility would be to try to find c.o.s to interview, or people in a small town that hosts a prison. Not that all of them would feel that way, but you'd be more likely to find people who do.
