I am a counselor in a Max facility in NYS and a graduate student in clinical psychology. I have/am working to create a therapy program to include addiction, anger management/and transitional programs. I would like to incorporate experiential training and stress management i.e.MBSR as part of the core program. In addition to this I would like to see a family integration aspect to include meeting the family the inmate will be released to and discussing support issues and needs. The inmate would be an active participant with the family in developing a post release plan. I am currently writing a proposal and hopefully some action will come from it.

I think the re-entry success will be enhanced by the programs received while being incarcerated. The effectiveness of any program is affected by the persons facilitating, security level of the facility and of course the administration.

If you are going to talk re-entry in is a multi faceted process that starts long before the release date.

Thanks for the info. I have looked at the project and the discussion. It seems that the family program was a group program. What I have proposed is a session with only the inmate and family member. I think in a closed session of this sort (from my experience) the family member and inmate may be more apt to discuss personal concerns than in a group environment. They are still in prison and are apt to say in a group what they think the counselor wants to hear. I think dealing with families in a group environment eliminates some hard questions that neither party is willing to address with other inmates around. Also, Queensbouro is a minimum security facility, a lot of max parolees would not be able to participate due to security clearance. I am going to look at this closer but I think this can work. thanks.
I find that the state moves very slow, so I am not anticipating a speedy response. I should have it completed and submitted by 9/11. I will post what ever the out come is so if there is any one else that would like to make use of the information they may do so.
Hi Stephen,

just wondering how the program you were designing, turned out.

Sounds like the focus on addiction, anger mgt, group home, had alot of merit. Did you get it up and running?

Where does the MBSR fit into the program?

Loved Ones Incarcerated Support Organization was founded by me three years ago when my sons were incarcerated. LOI has support discussions that meet throughout the county. Households left behind due to incarceration issues meet for mutual support and share resource information. In the three years we've been formed,-I formed LOI's board of directors, some board members work directly and indirectly with incarcerated.-

LOI realizes that of the many support components for incarcerated and reentrants is a ex-offender mentoring program. One son returned home to me and a painful learning process was that sometimes the household welcoming returning loved ones may not be the best and supportive place for a returning loved one that supports their defined success as; staying alive, substance abuse free, crime free. Sometimes the healthiest support a returning loved can recieve from their households is to enter a halfway house to stablilze into the community. a
