I'm sure most of you are familiar with the obscene prices for prison collect calls. I always thought it was a little futile to fight it, but then Barack Obama was elected. He seems ready and willing to make change and stand up for human rights. Seems being the keyword here, we shall see. However, I decided to start a petition regarding the prices of prison calls and maybe this new slightly more socially conscious administration might do something about it. My goal is to have 2.2 million signatures (one for every inmate in the US) and so far I have 73. Haha, I have a way to go but I'm not giving up and I hope you all will sign it:

Thanks for posting this Courtney! Please sign this petition everyone!
Hello,

I suppport you in lowering the cost for the prison collect calls
I agree, and I will sign the petition. Are you aware, however, that Michigan, in response to a suit on behalf of prisoners, has decreased the cost of calling by about 80% (from near $1/minute to about 20 cents)? Still ridiculous, but much better. A friend who is incarcerated there hears rumors the state has found a way to add surcharges and start to jack it up again, but so far that is just rumors. How bad is it in other states?
I will sign the petition, and I will forward it to all my friends and business associates to get it signed as well. Here in New Mexico the Public Regulatory Commision was supposedly looking into it a while back, but I haven't seen any updates regarding what has happened. I have my phone service with Quest whom bills me on behalf of Public Communications Services, INC., and I sacrifice and work two jobs so that my son's soon to be 7 year old daughter can communicate and maintain a relationship with her father who went into the prison system here when she was 5. They had a close relationship when he first went into prison, and I do not want that to change. I am fortunate enough unlike many other families that I have met since he has been in prsion to be able to allow him to call her on a daily basis, but my phone bill runs between 325.00 and 400.00 per month. If I wasn't working a second job I would not be able to do it. the charges per minute are all over the board and range from about .30 per minute to .76 per minute without any consistency from day to day and week to week. It's as if some person sits at a desk and plays roulette or plays a game like pin the tail on the donkey blindfolded to decide what the charges will be for each seperate call.
