I started working for Human Rights Watch in May of 2006. I had no prior background in United States prison advocacy when I got the job, nor any sense of what it means for America to be farming its less privileged citizens into a virtually inescapable matrix of punishment
and incarceration, so most of what I know now of our society's prison
