Dear Floyd, I have been teaching meditation to women at a state prison near Ann Arbor Michigan for the last three years. In addition to the issues that you have mentioned, the issue of childhood abuse of one kind or another is quite prevalent--also…

Dharma Prison Teaching and Women Inmates

Namaste PDN Yogis. You were so very helpful in commenting on  my previous blogs that I thought I might ask for you help once again. I have been asked to add women inmates to my meditation teaching schedule at our regional correctional facility. I am sure that women inmates  have some additional concerns that will come up during the teachings (family issues, time away from children etc) but I would very much appreciate hearing from those of you with some experience offering these precious…See More

I work as a mental health therapist in a Minnesota prison and teach Anger Management to general population. I have incorporated "relaxation" skills into the curriculum and start by teaching about the fight or flight response and how proper…

Bows of gratitude to PDN bloggers

Deep bows of gratitude to PDN bloggers who opened your hearts and minds to respond to my blog re first day at correctional facility. I have incorporated your advice; shortened some meditation periods, paid attention to their squeaky chair signs and added a bit more discussion to the prison visits. As I was leaving the room recently the men said “hey, we really appreciate you coming here”. I can’t describe the feeling that arose in me in seeing this spontaneous practice of gratitude arise and…See More

Hi Floyd:  I work at a prison in a DV/AODA unit, and get to do treatment groups.  My supervisor said I can't do meditation as part of the group.  She was unwilling to discuss it further.  So we do "relaxation"…

I think you will do fine.  15 minutes should be too long.  I'm a psychologist at a men's prison in Indiana, as part of group sessions, I have offered meditation and a mind body skills group.  When I see the men begin to…

First day at Correctional facility

This is my first blog- not on this site but first ever! I just completed the first day of teaching at a correctional facility. I left with more questions that when I arrived- always a good sign!  I met with 4  men today for an hour. All seemed to want to find some peace with their mind. I decided to throw out the script  and just talk about what it is that creates our suffering- mine and theirs- no difference! What causes our suffering isn’t rocket science! Greed, hatred and delusion (not…See More

I have practiced in the Theravadan tradition for 17 yrs and act as resident teacher for local Insight Meditation Group. I have training as teacher and have been mentored by Matthew Flickstein and Ginny Morgan. Also studied with Bhante Gunaratana. Recently I've been asked to offer meditation in the local correctional facility which will begin shortly.I very much appreciate having an organization like PDN available for help in my prison dharma teaching. I have worked and volunteered overseas in Nepal but feel teaching meditation and mindful awareness of body feelings, and mental states in prison setting will be more of a challenge than anything I've attempted before. I am hopeful that some will benefit from this endeavor. I know that I will benefit from offering these preiceless teachings. Any suggestions from members of PDN will be greatly appreciated,Namaste everyone. I consider you all my mentors.
