- I first read about meditation being taught in prisons about a year ago, and I was so moved and surprised by the personal stories of transformation and compassion that I read. Recently, due to the inspiration of close friends and some of my own research into the problems of American prisons (violence, sexual abuse, etc) I have become more and more concerned about how prisons are effecting prisoners, and in fact, all of society. I have been saddened and disturbed by what I've learned. I feel like there has to be something better, to help heal individuals in detention, and our violent and intolerant society. I have been a meditation practitioner for a couple of years and have seen just a small glimpse of the way mindfulness and cultivating compassion for yourself and all beings can transform your life. I am convinced that those in the world who are suffering so greatly will benefit from learning to practice mindfulness and compassion. I just think prisoners should be treated like people, and they deserve healing and a second chance just as much as anyone.
