Marilynne Hahn commented on Floyd Fantelli's blog post 'First day at Correctional facility'
Hi Floyd:  I work at a prison in a DV/AODA unit, and get to do treatment groups.  My supervisor said I can't do meditation as part of the group.  She was unwilling to discuss it further.  So we do "relaxation"…

I hope you enjoy a few days of being "unplugged!"  :-)  As I am drowning in school work today, and you will be unplugged from the net, if it's ok, I'll email you later about some of your work and it's foci. …

Marilynne Hahn replied to Paddy murray's discussion 'Review of Buddhist chaplaincy maximum security prison'
Hi Paddy: thanks for posting your review.  Just read it so many months after you posted.  It's encouraging to know there are Buddhist Chaplains here and there.  I work in a high rise prison in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA and lead…

Marilynne Hahn commented on barry evans's blog post 'Jail meditation essay on Mindful'
Hi Barry: Thank you for the insightful essay.   I work in a prison and work with the men using "relaxation exercises" since my supervisor categorically dismissed any suggestion of integrating meditation with no room for…

Marilynne Hahn commented on Prison Dharma Network's blog post 'From the Neighborhood to Jail —and Back into the Neighborhood New Book Follows Juvenile Male Offenders'
Well, here's another book that I need to acquire and read! Thanks Samara for the good lead. It's so good for these kids to have a voice. It's so amazing that the young offenders that I work with are so often cheerful. Their challenges…

How you are involved in Prison Dharma
Corrections Professional
My Prison Dharma Group or Organization
I work as a social worker with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections at a sanction holding facility and facilitate a 90 day alternative to revocation program for domestic violence/drug and alcohol offenders. I utilize mindfulness techniques quite often using Path of Freedom and non-violent communication activities. We have a (typical and mediocre) curriculum that we have to use so I sneak in the good stuff whenever I can.
Tell us about yourself & your interest in prison dharma: (answer required) .
See above. Beside the group above, I had been corresponding with a young man inmate for the last 11 years. This young man perpetrated an armed robbery (against me) and also several other crimes and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He somehow got my address and sent me a letter of apology. I have been writing/visiting him ever since and he calls me his second mom. I have sent him dharma books which he likes very much and we discuss them through the mail. Then, three years ago, I became employed in juvenile corrections. There is very little spiritual work with these kids in general, so after teaching a few youths some meditation skills individually, they asked to have a group. The youths teach me a lot and some are very insightful.

Your relationship with the inmate you visit and correspond with is interesting indeed!  Wonderful example of living your practice!

Looking forward to corresponding with you later.  Enjoy your Sunday!
