One of my students, who's a Native American inmate, wrote asking me how to handle the fact that someone--in this case an institutional chaplain--had betrayed his confidence and totally compromised him with his peers. Here's a bit of what I wrote back to him:

Here are some techniques you might want to try. You'll have to experiment and see which ones work best for your situation. Practice is always an experiment in the real world. First of all, don't call that person any names in your…

Hi Kobai,
If you have the emails of Alan up at UW (I've been following his research, too) and the other gentleman you mentioned, please feel free to invite them to the site!
Thank you for hanging out here,
Erin

Dear Kobai -

I am a member of the Shambhala Center of Washington. DC, and a student at the University of Mary Washington, in Virginia, finishing a bachelor's degree in leadership theory with a concentration in organizational behavior.

For many several now, I have followed the work of the Prison Dharma Network. I am writing at this time because I am doing a research paper and presentation for one of my classes, and the topic I have chosen is the impact of prison meditation programs. The project will discuss the benefits of meditation, as documented by recent medical research, describe existing prison meditation programs, and provide insight into the impact of these programs, as reported by participants.

As an ex-prisoner and meditation practitioner, I would like to interview you about your experiences, specifically how you came to meditate and how you feel it has impacted you.

Please feel free to contact me via email (LaughingRiver@gmail.com) or telephone (703-975-2725).

Many thanks!

Hi there:

Just wanted to let you know (although you've likely heard it before) how helpful your book has been both for me and for the folks I've sent it to. There's a copy now in the little B'ist library I put together at the prison I volunteer at here in Canada.

Joshua: I'm a bitchy princess--haven't been promoted to Queen yet. Yes, I think right speech is the biggest daily practice challenge for all of us. One of my earliest published essays was called "Right Speech in the Gay Community," It's in "Queer Dharma II," published by Gay Sunshine Press. It might still be in print.
I have wanted to spend more time north of the border and getting to know the city of Vancouver, so I would be happy to come up and do a workshop. There are people in prison work I would also like to meet while there. I could either do something for the Gay Buddhist community or for prison Dharma people--or both.
If you want to help organize something, I'd be very grateful.

Royally expectant of promotion,
/Kobai

"Heart open, mouth shut" -- priceless! Thank you! (A wonderful daily practice for this bitchy queen.) Thank you also for the link. Do you ever come up across the border to do talks or workshops? I would be happy to organize something if you are coming up this way.

Why don't you choose between April 8 or April 15. Both are fine for me. I'll mail you whatever they need for gate pass. I don't like vitals traveling on the net. So send me a mailing address. Also, Plum Mountain will buy my ticket (I'll fly down from SeaTac) but we'd appreciate dana if the (outside) group can do it. I'd also be happy to meet before or after with Dharma volunteers or any other Buddhists who are interested. Maybe I could give a talk or workshop and that might generate some dana. I can also bring some books, though not enough for all the inside guys. Remember, the individual inmates can write to PDN and ask for their own copy. I'll sign them when I'm with them.
/Kobai
