This weekend I was blessed to attend teachings by the wonderful Ven.Robina Courtin. In a style like only Robina can do ,she taught with skillful means ,to the mostly Western audience. It was quite a contrast in the teaching style experienced with Lama Zopa Rinpoche ,but no less valuable.I find great inspiration from Ven.Robina ,who was kind enough to visit me several times during my incarceration. The work she does is of great importance.Liberation Prison Project did in fact furnish me with the… Continue

Tashi Delek! To all here.Let me share some of the trials & tribulations from this practioner.I found my release from prison after 15 years to be quite an adjustment .After being cared for so long I found living alone to be a very difficult task{no distractions!!!!].Even doing retreat in the hole has a good many distractions that became familiar to me and thus an attachment grew on a very subtle level.though I've adjusted fairly well it has taken time.I belive that anyone who has done over 5… Continue

Mark----I hope it wasn't me that dropped the ball on this, but I am still interested in taking on a PenPal from the prison system......you mentioned that you knew someone who is looking for a penpal. Would you like to try to hook us up? If that person is already connected with someone else, I am open to another contact if you are aware of any????
Thanks again for recognizing the preciousness of ALL humans, no matter who they are or what they have done a..nd the need for all of us to support each other.

Yes! I think I am ready to make a commitment to at least one other human person by LISTENING TO THEIR WORDS and RESPONDING WITH MY HEART!

What do you think is needed for prisoners to have more access to people who want to support them in this way. Maybe there is something we can do to make this more available to people in and out of prison. Kind of like a Monopoly Board, free access to "Just Visiting"......joyfully

Mark: Sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to you. I'm delighted to see how involved you are and how much you have to offer from personal experience.....I am happy to connect with you and begin to participate more intently in this project......I have been busy with other things and now am more available. Am considering being a penpal. What do you think???? Joy

Dear Mark -

I am a member of the Shambhala Center of Washington. DC, and a student at the University of Mary Washington, in Virginia, finishing a bachelor's degree in leadership theory with a concentration in organizational behavior. I will graduate in May 2008 at the age of 41.

For many several now, I have followed the work of the Prison Dharma Network. I am writing at this time because I am doing a research paper and presentation for one of my classes, and the topic I have chosen is the impact of prison meditation programs. The project will discuss the benefits of meditation, as documented by recent medical research, describe existing prison meditation programs, and provide insight into the impact of these programs, as reported by participants.

As an ex-prisoner and meditation practitioner, I would like to interview you about your experiences, specifically how you came to meditate and how you feel it has impacted you.

Please feel free to contact me via email (LaughingRiver@gmail.com) or telephone (703-975-2725).

Many thanks!

Lisa
