Poem from a prisoner

Written by M. S., Prisoner in CA

Statistically Proven

Another child born in poverty; another high powered assault

Rifle on inner city streets; another child dies by "fate"

Another statistic!

Another woman beaten; another woman raped;

Another crime committed; another statistic!

Another welfare check; another homeless family;

Another potential surgeon, superstar, scientists and senator addicted

To drugs; another lost hope; another broken…

Stop & Hear The Music

Pearls Before Breakfast

Can one of the nation's great musicians cut through the fog of a D.C. rush hour? Let's find out.

HE EMERGED FROM THE METRO AT THE L'ENFANT PLAZA STATION AND POSITIONED HIMSELF AGAINST A WALL BESIDE A TRASH BASKET. By most measures, he was nondescript: a youngish white man in jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt and a Washington Nationals baseball cap. From a small case, he removed a violin. Placing the open case at his feet, he… Continue

Prisons vs. hospitals

One of the more interesting facts I found when trudging through my MA thesis is this:

ratio of prisons to Americans 1:63,000
ratio of hospitals to Americans 1:53,000

The difference of course is that (in the absence of a health care system worthy of the name) prisons are accessible to all Americans.

We're both on-again off-again sitters, so I think it will be a positive experience for both of us to encourage each other… Continue

Winter

In the heart of winter, the chill freezes lakes and rivers; water becomes so solid that it can bear men, beasts and carts. As the spring approaches, earth and water warm up and thaw. What then remains of the hardness of the ice? Water is soft and fluid, ice hard and sharp, so we cannot say that they are identical; but neither can we say that they are different, because ice is only solidified water, and water is only melted ice. The same applies to our… Continue
