700 on Death Row in California

By Stefanie Faucher

When I learned that California had reached 700 people on death row as a result

of a death sentence imposed earlier this month, I was astounded. I knew

it was coming, but we reached this epic milestone far sooner than I had

expected. California now has more than twice as many death row

prisoners as Texas, frequently known as the death state, which had 331

as of January… Continue

Inmates' Families Carry the Burden of Incarceration

When Americans think about the prison system, we think about the men and women locked up in them and the people who work there. But we rarely, if ever, think about inmates’ families. We should.

The Boston Globe had it right in its recent editorial on the Massachusetts Supreme Court’s putting a halt to the Bristol County sheriff’s $5 dollar a day fee on inmates for upkeep. As the Globe noted, since there were no work release programs or jobs at the jail, inmates’ families were the… Continue

Picture Show: Free Again

In "Free Again," the photographer Yusuf Sayman chronicles the day-to-day challenges associated with the re-entry process that follows a long prison sentence. His subjects are Tarik, a man in his third week of freedom after a four-year prison sentence (which began when he was just 16), and Doris, who has just completed 27 years of incarceration. "In prison they get used to a very different set of rules and social behaviors," says Sayman. "Doris said… Continue

Do Better Nutrition And Gardening Programs in Prisons Mean Less Violence?

By Rachel Cernansky

Boulder, CO, USA | Wed Jan 13, 2010 10:30 AM ET

Prisons are not known for their culinary delights, but the lack of nutritionally-balanced meals for prisoners may actually be contributing to the cycle of violence that our country's prison system has not been all that successful in breaking.

Oxford University is currently conducting a study to look at the relationship between nutritional intake and… Continue

Juvenile Justice Done Right? Send 'em to Boot Camp! That's Right: Boot Camp!

But articles and editorials from across the country continue to appear as states grapple with shocking numbers that won’t go away. Will all this worry and lament translate into change? Who knows?

The one thing I’m pretty sure won’t change is America’s fear of these new barbarians marauding our streets in hordes (except today we call them… Continue
