An invitation to PDN members and to Prisoners everywhere

This entry was written for prisoners and posted in the journal "Freedom Inside" in July, 2009. We extend this same invitation to PDN members worldwide and ask that you log onto our website and register there. Let us know that you will be carrying this invitation to prisoners in your sangha. Our pilot program in 2009 created amazing results with 10 prisoners in the Boise Men's Incarceration Center. We believe that this invitation allows prisoners to be part of something meaningful that is… Continue

Power and control = happiness ?

Another interesting psychological trait I have noticed in myself and others is the tendancy when in a situation we feel out of control in, that our reaction can often be, in the need to regain a sense of control we can become zealously firm and controlling in our approach and forget to give those around us the freedoms they deserve and need.

I think this is a generally recognised psychological reaction process.

I got thinking about the troubles that can often occur in our… Continue

The Great Escape

by Pippin Ross from the Shambhala Sun Magazine Sept 2009

The Great Escape

Yoga and meditation help Pippin Ross escape the hell of America’s oldest prison for women.

“RELEASE YOUR DIABETICS! RELEASE YOUR DIABETICS TO TRAUMA!”

This is prison’s wake-up song—the deafening, metallic squawk of the PA—and, for many women here, it signals a trip to medical for a morning insulin shot. I’m at MCI… Continue

10th MBSR Retreat in Florida

from KC Walpole:

Greetings:

Hope all is well in the west. It is hard to believe that we are on our tenth retreat and that the institution was delivering over a hundred noon meals a day to be eaten as a part of the noon retreat. I included a photo of the first retreat with 27 inmates. At that one we only had cushions and were using those thin rubber yoga mats as cushions on a tile floor. We now have about one hundred sets of mats and… Continue

Transitional Dorms

from KC Walpole of Gateless Gate in Florida

Greetings:

Hope everyone is doing well. I have been asked on several occasions in the last two weeks for suggestions on transitional dorms. They include everything from the physical organization of the dorm to course of instruction. Most recently the questions center around matters of instruction. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to speak to all the requests and as such am going to give the shotgun approach and divide… Continue

In Prisoners’ Wake, a Tide of Troubled Kids

From the New York Times

"The chances of seeing a parent go to prison have never been greater, especially for poor black Americans, and new research is documenting the long-term harm to the children they leave behind. Recent studies indicate that having an incarcerated parent doubles the chance that a child will be at least temporarily homeless and measurably increases the likelihood of physically aggressive behavior, social isolation,… Continue

Please Sign Clemency Petition for Leonard Peltier

Mr. Peltier was convicted for the June 26, 1975 murders of 2 FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. There were 4 defendants originally charged before the Grand Jury. Two of the defendants were tried before the court and found Not Guilty by reason of self-defense. Charges were dropped on the 3rd defendant. Mr. Peltier was tried after a change of venue to North Dakota. In this trial Mr. Peltier wasn't able to put up a self-defense argument.… Continue

Thoughts on aggressive behaviour

Its my general observation that a lot of people put faith in the religion of aggression and power through domination and control. I used to subscribe to that school of thought. The law of the Jungle, survival of the fitest. Hit them hard, hit them first, before they hit you.

I was listening to a friend yesterday describe the story of a zen monk. The monk is meditating on the beauty of life and a warrior approaches him with a sword drawn and says "do you realise I could kill… Continue
