Volunteer opening for teaching every other Monday morning at Suffolk County House of Correction

Hello, I’ve been teaching meditation as a volunteer at the Suffolk County House of Correction for 15 years, and I love doing it. It’s one of the longest-running and most successful classes at the Jail. The program is every Monday morning from 10 to 11am (except holidays). It’s very rewarding work.

I've been sharing the work with someone who is now moving on to teach at a state prison.

The House of Correction is one of Boston’s county jails and is a minimum security… Continue

Real Soutions for Ending Prison Rapes

Sex and power -- forces rampant in our prison system, thwarted and twisted by the jail culture. Lock up large numbers of the same gender and the frustrated sexual energy is palpable.

Likewise, in jail everyone -- wardens, correctional officers, inmates -- wants

power, fights for it, manipulates for it, in a place where everyone is made…

Incarcerated Education: Why Teach the Hard to Reach

Over any teacher’s career—in my case, 26 years of teaching high school English to at-risk teenagers, the last 10 of those years in an adult county jail—you get asked lots of questions. Some about the topic

you’re teaching; others, well, it’s hard to know where they come from.

But there’s one question I heard a lot, most frequently from my jail

students, “Why don’t you teach in a real school?”

This usually happened when a lesson went well and a kid…

Let Go and Relax

Let Go and Relax

In mind's basic nature, let go and relax.

In mind's nature, clarity-emptiness, let go and relax.

In mind's nature, openness and spaciousness, let go and relax.

Let go and relax, and then look nakedly.

Look nakedly, and let go and relax.

There is nothing to look at and no one looking.

Nevertheless there is an appearance of someone looking…

Anyone in the LA area interested in helping a Buddhist group at the state prison in Lancaster, CA?

My penpal friend, a lifer, doing his time in Lancaster State prison, wrote me:

"We have a Buddhist program at this prison, but, we don't have any Buddhist sponsors to come into the prison and teach us. So, if the Dharmanetwork can have some contact with a Buddhist practitioner from the Los Angeles, Lancaster or Bakersfield area; this way, we can ask them to volunteer a day ( once a week) inside of the prison.

Los Angeles is only 45 minutes from this prison.

Lancaster only a… Continue
