For those of you that liked that picture of the Dalai Lama I drew I decided up put it up on Ebay for auction. I had spoke with my spiritual mentor while in prison because I had some misgivings about charging to religious works but he assured me that as long as what I do with the money was honorable it was fine. Thoughts?

I sold a statue of Kuan Yin on Marktplaats (a Dutch sort of Ebay) as a fundraising for a retreat centre we are building. It was bought by a woman who loved buddhist statues and it was the one she missed in her collection. I went with her to find a suitable place for it in her house. She really appreciated it, not only as an object but for what it represented. It was very important for me that I did it as a fundraising and not for other purposes.

I typically only work in graphite with a little chalk pastel for contrast so that's fairly cheap. $13 for pencils, 5-10 for pastels, then whatever a pad of giant paper happens to cost, about the same. I originally showed this piece at a show in Connecticut while I was still in and the flyer can be viewed here, but it didn't sell there, and now I need the cash. I'd much rather give the religious pieces away as I don't feel right selling them, so the alternative is to use the money to help others as much as possible. I made a post about giving Tsa'Tsa's away to inmates in the forums, but don't have the link handy.

"Inspiring" is in the eye of the beholder. Who's to say that any art need be classified under a particular genre to make a connection with the viewer? Art supplies really are expensive though aren't they? Stay true to your passion and it will open doors for you.

This is the only piece I have right now. My wife, who just signed up for PDN today, has another of the Dalai Lama I did and some assorted works that are less... inspiring (I'm a metal head as well as a Buddhist) I've been doing the occasional odd job fixing my moms' friends computers, but all that cash has gone towards getting things ready for school, as it should. I should be able to acquire more gear, on my own, shortly and start drawing again. I've thought about doing things on commisson, but it takes me so long to do a drawing of that calibre (40+ hours), so we'll see.

It's a beautiful drawing, Jared. Have you considered selling your work, in general, with proceeds going to your favorite charity? I found this very rewarding myself; to use talent I was given to benefit others. Are you going to be offering other pieces on Ebay?
