One of the more interesting facts I found when trudging through my MA thesis is this:

ratio of prisons to Americans 1:63,000
ratio of hospitals to Americans 1:53,000

The difference of course is that (in the absence of a health care system worthy of the name) prisons are accessible to all Americans.

Odd but indicative of national priorities I suppose.

have you compared the amount funding spent per prisoner compared to that of a student in public education? alarming... more than 50% of prisoners are individuals that have a specific learning and/or emotional disability (as identified through the public school process for eligibility). should the adequate funding as promised in 1975 ever be provided to support individuals in public education, perhaps we could do a better job of prevention/intervention to prepare our youth for a meaningful existance.
