Taiwan Prison hosts Buddhist initiation ceremony for inmates

Taipei, Aug. 14 (CNA) A Buddhist initiation ceremony for 91 inmates was conducted by the Venerable Hsin Ting from the Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Tainan Prison Tuesday, the prison's superintendent said.
Thirty-four of the prisoners received full marks in the prison's first Buddhist exam of 2012 and were rewarded for their performances the same day, Superintendent Liu Wen-sheng added.
Liu pointed out that inmates who had been imprisoned for many years were often likely to show unstable and negative emotions.
It is hoped that the prison's religious course will offer inmates the power of belief to help them stabilize their emotions, Liu said, encouraging prisoners to find a new direction of life.
The event was jointly organized by the prison, the Fo Guang Shan Compassion Foundation and the Fo Guang Shan Monastery's southern Taiwan branch.
