Why We Practice the Dharma

All the water and drink you've consumed
From beginningless time until now
Has failed to satisfy your thirst or bring you contentment.
Drink therefore of this stream
Of enlightened mind, Fortunate Ones.

So nice to read your response, Susan.  And so wonderful to hear of your work at SQ.  Perhaps it will also please you to know I have a friend who was released long, long ago from SQ and neverreturned,he is doing well, happy, and productive --- still quite the "tough guy" but a good person nontheless.

Thank you Stephen! I love that you mentioned Milarepa.

Throughout my 5 years now on the path of chaplaincy, my bf (who is Tibetan) has patiently and kindly offered support. However, after about 6 months into my internship at SQ I could tell he was uncomfortable with me going there. He made a few comments questioning why I am there, what am I doing, how long do I have to keep going in, etc.

One day one of my supes there gave me a beautiful photo tryptych of 3 of the inmates we work with in meditation. I showed it to K. who suddenly understood-he took a long silent look at the photos and said "oh. I see! It is like Jetsun Mila!" I said YES! This is beautiful dharma work K, and yes, what these guys are doing is very much like Jetsun Mila! So-thanks.
