Instructor Natalie Smith says yoga and crime don't really come together naturally. "That's part of the strength of the program. When you're bringing yoga to a population that's in this really stressed out environment. There's no choice but to come into a sense of peace with the practice."
Monroe is one of seven correctional facilities where volunteers try to help inmates escape these walls without breaking the law. "It's definitely an escape, it's a deep focus that allows us to free our minds. We might be here but doing that hour while we're doing yoga we're definitely not here" Says inmate Nate Bernal-Wagner
Yoga Behind Bars has been around for a few years. Many people were skeptical, at first, but the volunteers say they hear from inmates and correctional officers that it's making a difference.
